Skinny BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) in Tampa, FL
Dr. Traci Temmen, a female board-certified plastic surgeon in Tampa, Florida, sees patients every week that have been told by other doctors that they are “too skinny for a Brazilian Butt Lift.” Is this true? Can you be too skinny for a BBL? Well, the answer is… maybe, maybe not!
In truth, the answer depends on the ultimate result the patient is seeking. Dr. Traci Temmen often spends an hour during initial patient consultations discussing the individual patients’ goals for surgery. Dr. Temmen understands that a Brazilian Butt Lift is not just about volume and creating a “big butt.” For many patients, a Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is about removing discrete areas of unwanted fat and transferring the fat to give more gluteal projection, fill in hip dents, or produce a smooth and refined silhouette. So, if you believe or have been told by someone else that you are too skinny for a BBL, give Dr. Traci Temmen a call today!
Results may vary
Recently, the Florida Law for BBLs has changed for patients’ safety. The new law states that a surgeon cannot perform more than 3 BBLs in one day, and must inject fat under ultrasound guidance to prevent fat embolisms from occurring. The limit of 4000cc of fat removal during this procedure remains intact. Dr. Temmen continues to adhere to Florida requirements.
How Much Fat Do You Need for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
The amount of fat needed for a skinny Brazilian Butt Lift depends on the patient’s desires, available fat, and anatomy. In general, the smaller or skinnier the patient, the less fat that is needed to make a dramatic difference in their overall gluteal shape or projection during a skinny BBL surgery. For example, in a 5’10” patient weighing 180 pounds, it would not be uncommon to remove 4,000 cc’s of fat during the liposuction portion of the surgery and transfer up to 1,500 to 2,000 cc’s of fat into each buttock to achieve a full, firm, and dramatic result.
However, in a smaller patient that is, for example, 5’5” and weighs 110 pounds, removing only 700 to 1,000 cc’s of fat and transferring as little as 350 to 500 cc’s of fat into each buttock can achieve a significant change in body shape and gluteal projection. To reiterate, it takes smaller volumes of fat to make dramatic changes in the body of smaller patients!
Alternative Solution to BBL
Of course, there are limitations to the skinny Brazilian Butt Lift. If a patient is extremely thin and desires a very large, projected, and voluminous buttocks with full, wide hips, this may not be possible, even for Dr. Traci Temmen! In this case, Dr. Temmen may recommend the patient consider butt implants or a composite butt augmentation (i.e. gluteal implants combined with liposuction and fat transfer to the buttocks).
Should I Gain Weight for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift?
In general, Dr. Traci Temmen recommends that patients maintain a stable weight prior to Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. Unfortunately, if a patient gains weight specifically in preparation for a BBL then naturally returns to their baseline weight after surgery, the volume and projection of the newly formed buttocks will decrease as well. Thus, decisions regarding a Brazilian Butt Lift surgery are best made when the patient is at their stable, baseline, ideal weight.
Candidates for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift
Depending on their desires, many patients who have been told by other surgeons that they are “too skinny for a BBL” may actually be a candidate for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift with Dr. Traci Temmen. Of course, all patients must be in good health without a history of smoking, major medical problems, diabetes, heart disease, or blood clots.
Who is Not a Candidate for a Skinny BBL?
A patient with a history of any of the medical problems or conditions listed above is not a candidate for elective surgery or a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift with Dr. Temmen.
Additionally, a patient may not be a good candidate for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift if their desired result is simply not possible with their anatomy or the amount of available fat. Because of this, Dr. Temmen carefully and patiently discusses the desired result with each and every patient desiring a BBL so she can fully understand the patient’s goals. Dr. Traci Temmen encourages potential patients to bring in “wish pics” during their consultation so she can fully understand the look that each patient finds ideal. Because of her experience, honesty, and meticulous nature, Dr. Temmen will be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift.
Skinny BBL Scars
In general, a Brazilian Butt Lift consists of liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, love handles, and back with fat transfer to the buttocks. However, in small, thin patients, Dr. Traci Temmen may have to “search” a little harder to find adequate amounts of fat to perform a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift. Small amounts of liposuction may be performed on multiple areas of the body to gather the necessary fat. On skinny patients, Dr. Temmen may do liposuction of the trunk, upper lateral chest or back, inner thighs, outer thighs, and even the inner knees to get the fat needed for a Skinny BBL. Thus, patients undergoing a Skinny BBL will have small, approximately 1⁄4” scars anywhere liposuction is performed. Dr. Temmen is usually able to strategically place the liposuction scars so they are as least visible as possible. To place the fat in the buttocks during a Skinny BBL, one to three tiny port scars are placed on each side of the buttocks.
Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery
Recovery for a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift is similar to that for a regular BBL. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1 1⁄2 – 2 hours to complete. Patients recover in a private recovery room with their own nurse for approximately one hour after surgery and go home the same day. Most patients require drains in areas where liposuction was performed; these drains are removed in the office usually within 7-10 days.
For maximal comfort and safety, Dr. Traci Temmen recommends that patients take 7-10 days off work or school following a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift. Most patients will also benefit from some kind of “help” during the first several days following their surgery. This help may be from a family member, friend, nursing service, or a surgical recovery house. Dr. Temmen and her staff will help you plan and prepare the recovery that works best for your needs.
Finally, Dr. Temmen recommends limited sitting during the first two to four weeks after a Skinny BBL and no strong exercise for six weeks. This period of rest allows the body to heal and recover as safely and comfortably as possible.

Risks of a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift
Like any surgery, the risks of a Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift include bleeding, infection, scarring, and normal asymmetries. Most of these small complications can be handled in the office with appropriate postoperative management, oral antibiotics, compression garments, and postoperative massage. In order to catch and treat any small issues before they become larger complications, Dr. Traci Temmen and her staff follow all postoperative patients very carefully in the days and weeks following surgery.
Unfortunately, as has been reported in the media, serious and even deadly complications such as blood clots and fat embolisms have been associated with Brazilian Butt Lift surgeries. Dr. Traci Temmen treats each patient like her family and above all else, has her patient’s safety and well-being in mind. To ensure the absolute best outcome for each and every patient, Dr. Temmen performs only the most advanced and safest techniques when performing the Brazilian Butt Lift, Skinny Brazilian Butt Lift, or Revision Brazilian Butt Lift. All Brazilian Butt Lift surgeries are performed using the “SAFE” Liposuction Technique (i.e. Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization) and fat is transferred into the subcutaneous plane of the buttocks. Research has shown that injecting fat into the superficial layer of the buttocks helps to avoid injury to and fat transfer into the larger pelvic vessels found in and below the gluteal musculature. Current thought is that fat uptake into these large vessels is the cause of the major complications and deaths associated with Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery.
Dr. Traci Temmen is a board-certified plastic surgeon and is up to date with current literature, safety protocol, devices, and surgical technique. Rest assured that Dr. Temmen will do everything in her power to deliver the safest and most beautiful surgical result possible.
